Schema markup for GEO: tell machines who you are

Schema markup is code added to your pages. Humans never see the code. Search engines and AI tools read the code and learn the facts about your business without guessing.

Schema markup in plain words

Schema markup labels the facts on your page so machines do not have to guess. Google documents the vocabulary in its structured data introduction. Start with the business details, then add service and FAQ types.

Why schema matters for GEO

Plain text needs interpretation. A tool reads “We have served clients since 2014 from our office on Keizerstraat” and must work out the meaning. Schema states facts directly. “This is a business. This is the name. This is the address. This is the founding year. These are the services.” Less interpretation means fewer errors in the answer.

The types to add first

  • Organization or LocalBusiness on your homepage. Name, logo, address, phone, and profile links.
  • Service on each service page. Name, description, and area served.
  • FAQPage on pages with questions and answers. Each question and answer pair.
  • Article on blog posts. Author, publish date, and update date.
  • Review on pages showing testimonials, only when the reviews are real.

How to add schema on WordPress

Rank Math SEO includes schema settings. Set your business details once in the plugin’s identity settings. Then assign the right type to each page from the page editor. You do not need to write code. Start with your homepage and your top three service pages.

Keep it honest

Schema must match the visible page. Fake reviews or invented details damage trust and risk penalties from search engines. If the page does not show a price, do not put a price in the schema. If you have no reviews, skip review markup.

Keep it current

Schema goes stale like any other content. When you change your address, hours, or services, update the schema in the same session. A mismatch between your schema and your Google Business Profile creates the same confusion you worked to remove.

Check your work

  1. Open Google’s Rich Results Test.
  2. Paste a page URL.
  3. Read the detected items.
  4. Fix every error and warning.
  5. Retest until the page passes.

What to expect

Schema does not guarantee a mention. No single change does. Schema removes doubt about who you are and what you offer. Pair the markup with clear pages, consistent listings, and real proof. Together, these signals give AI tools enough to work with.

Your next step

This week, set up Organization schema on your homepage and FAQ schema on one service page. Test both pages. Then extend to the rest of your site over the following weeks.

A simple example

A law firm adds LocalBusiness schema to its homepage. The schema lists the firm name, the street address in Paramaribo, the phone number, the opening hours, and links to its LinkedIn and Facebook pages. The firm then adds FAQPage schema to its family law page with five questions.

Nothing changes on screen. Behind the scenes, search engines and AI tools now read each fact without interpretation. When a buyer asks who handles family law in Paramaribo, the firm’s data is clean and ready.

Common mistakes

  • Adding several conflicting schema types to one page
  • Leaving default plugin text in the fields
  • Forgetting to update schema after a rebrand

Add schema markup in order

Start with your Organization and LocalBusiness types. Then add FAQ markup to pages that answer questions. Test each page in a schema validator before you publish. Schema markup tells machines who you are, so keep your name, address and phone number identical to your listings. Fix errors first, then add more types.
